We made solar ovens prior to Spring Break in which we baked some cookies. This was the first time we tried the solar ovens, so there are certainly improvements to be made in the future. All in all though, pretty fun lesson!

We did an activity to simulate the Santa Monica Bay and how pollutants have affected both the water and the animals that live in the water.  Totally cool, but totally gross!

Glacial Fun

In Science, we are discussing glaciers and the erosion that occurs by "glacial plucking". Ultimately, this is what happens when glaciers freeze around rocks, boulders, or other sediments as they slowly move along.

How do you represent this visually?

Ivory Soap=Glacier

Ivory Soap with Hot-Glued "Boulders"=Glacial Plucking

As the glacier "slides along the hillside" (down our playdough mountain), the boulders that have been frozen in leaves behind "scars" or "striations" in the rock (the playdough).

The kids liked it. :) And I got to play with my favorite toy--the glue gun.

On Blueberry Hill

We did an activity yesterday to show the relationship between landforms and topographic maps. Ultimately, the kids used a 3D model and then had to map it onto a 2D surface (transparency). The work with the exacto knife paid off! I named mine "Blueberry Hill". :)
